A/C had been out for a couple days. Heat index 105° , 90 ° in house. I called 15 + HVAC companies and the earliest appointment time anybody could come was a week away. I called Barneys . He shot me straight and told me " I'll get you up and going today but it's going to be in the evening." He showed up about 7 pm which is perfectly fine as it was hot. He fixed the problem in 15 mins ( needed refrigerant ) He charged a very fair price. He stands by his word. LIFESAVER!! VERY COOL NOW!!!

Excellent service! I called After 5 PM with a down AC unit looking for a diagnostic visit with possible fix. He offered same day and next day options. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! My A/C went out late Friday night and not many companies were wanting to help and look at my unit until after the weekend and holiday was over, but Barney’s heating and air responded ASAP, and was here first thing in the morning on Saturday! The technician gave me an exact time and was here on time, other companies gave me a big time frame/window 8am-6pm and that just didn’t work for us. This company is affordable and willing to work with you. Definitely will call them again!! Thank you!
Didn't stopped coming to work on it till it was fully fixed highly recommend
Service was AMAZING!!! Especially on a weekend. Found the issue right away and had our A/C running again. I would highly recommend Barney's Heating and Air over anyone I've dealt with in clarksville. Price was great. We are enrolling in his service care for twice a year service for a great price!!!! Again I would recommend him over anyone!!!
Barney and his team was professional, on time, and worked with the other foreman (foundation repair) on site in order to get my foundation repaired correctly and removed, then reinstalled new ductwork after the foundation was repaired. Due to his efforts, I was able to have 2 projects done at the same time and for a fraction of the cost in a total of 2 days. Highly recommend.
Technician knew immediately what the problem was, had the needed parts with him, and fixed the problem in less than an hour.
This isn’t just a review, it’s a debt of personal gratitude. These guys came out and replaced the HVAC system in my rental house in absolutely no time flat. They were able to work with me in the kind of way humans should work with one other, when it really counts. I am extremely grateful for their help with this project, and they have 100% earned all of my future business - barre none
First time (in this house) getting our heat pump inspected. Technician was detailed in explaining what was both good & bad about our 12 year-old system. He explained that our system was still functional but also showed us a part that might fail in the future. He tested the part in our presence & gave us a fair price for replacement (which we did). We were comfortable enough with the service that we are likely to purchase a service/maintenance agreement this Fall.
Excellent service from an honest professional. No one likes having to get an AC replaced, but Barney’s makes it less painful. Extremely responsive (at any time you need him), he will be honest, fair, and provide you a range of options without the up-sale you’d get elsewhere. His work is top notch quality, this is the 3rd time we have used him for our rentals and will continue to do so in the future. Highly recommend for your AC/HVAC needs.
PLUMBERS, Too! I just bought a house and didn’t know the pipes were clogged, the tub had a slow flow, and that the faucets were offset. In addition to heating and cooling, Jake has plumbers on hand. He and his crew did a good job, were friendly, and easy to communicate with.
The communication, fast response, and customer service is what will bring me back. I will definitely call them again to schedule my yearly unit cleaning and any repairs that come up. Highly recommend! Thank you guys!

I was having problems with my HVAC system and I called these guys to come check it out. Bobby and Jacob are very down to Earth guys. Bobby was very upfront about what issues I had with my system and gave me recommendations without feeling like they were trying to push anything on me. I was impressed with the knowledge he had and how fair their pricing was. I'm a single woman that lives alone with my children and I did not once feel uncomfortable with them or feel like they were trying to get over on me. Furnace Maintenance
The most important part of any furnace maintenance visit is a thorough safety inspection. Our technicians are trained to identify any potential hazards that could compromise the safety of your home. We start with a detailed examination of the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger is the component that separates the combustion gases from your breathing air. A crack in the heat exchanger could allow dangerous carbon monoxide to leak into your home. We use specialized tools, including inspection cameras, to look for any signs of cracks, rust, or stress on this critical part. This is the single most important safety check we perform.
We also conduct a comprehensive inspection of the furnace’s venting system. The vent pipe, or flue, is responsible for carrying the byproducts of combustion safely out of your home. We check for any blockages, leaks, or corrosion in the vent pipe. A blocked vent can cause combustion gases to back up into your home. We also ensure the vent has the proper slope and is securely connected. For high efficiency furnaces, we check both the intake and exhaust PVC pipes to make sure they are clear of any obstructions like leaves or animal nests. Proper venting is essential for safe furnace operation.
Cleaning the burner assembly is another key task during a furnace tune up. Over time, the burners can become dirty or corroded. This can lead to incomplete combustion, which reduces efficiency and can produce higher levels of carbon monoxide. Our technicians carefully remove and clean the burners to ensure a clean, efficient flame. We also clean and inspect the pilot light or hot surface igniter. A clean and properly functioning ignition system is crucial for reliable furnace operation. This step helps ensure your furnace lights smoothly and safely every time it cycles on.
The blower motor and assembly are the heart of your home’s air circulation system. During a maintenance visit, we inspect and clean the blower components. The blower wheel, or “squirrel cage,” can become caked with dust and debris over time. This restricts airflow and forces the motor to work harder, wasting electricity. We clean the blower wheel and the motor housing to restore proper airflow. We also check the motor’s electrical connections and lubricate its moving parts if necessary. A clean blower assembly not only improves efficiency but can also lead to a longer life for the motor.
We perform a series of tests on the furnace’s electrical components and safety controls. We check and tighten all electrical connections within the furnace. Loose connections can be a fire hazard and can cause component failure. We test the various safety switches, such as the high limit switch and the rollout switch. These devices are designed to shut down the furnace if an unsafe operating condition is detected. We verify that these critical safety features are working correctly. We also test the thermostat to ensure it is calibrated properly and communicating with the furnace as it should.
For gas furnaces, we check the gas pressure and adjust it if necessary. The furnace needs a specific gas pressure to operate efficiently and safely. Incorrect pressure can lead to incomplete combustion or other problems. We use a specialized tool called a manometer to measure the pressure and adjust the gas valve to meet the manufacturer’s specifications. This is a technical adjustment that should only be performed by a qualified professional. It is an important step in fine tuning your furnace for peak performance.
The service concludes with a final operational test and a cleaning of the furnace cabinet. We turn the furnace on and let it run through a full heating cycle. We monitor the startup and shutdown process to ensure it is smooth. We check the temperature rise to confirm that the airflow and heat output are balanced. We will also check and replace your furnace filter if you have one on hand. Finally, we clean the exterior of the furnace cabinet. You will receive a detailed report of our findings and any recommendations we have for your system.

Most Common Furnace Maintenance Questions
Regular furnace maintenance is essential for your safety and comfort. Homeowners often have questions about this important service. Here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about furnace maintenance.
Furnace maintenance is critically important for one primary reason: safety. Gas furnaces burn fuel to create heat, and this process produces byproducts, including carbon monoxide (CO). Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that is poisonous and can be deadly. A properly functioning furnace vents all of this gas safely out of your home. However, a problem like a cracked heat exchanger or a blocked flue could allow CO to leak into your living space. An annual safety inspection is the best way to catch these potential hazards before they become dangerous. This is the most compelling reason to never skip your furnace tune up.
Beyond the crucial safety aspect, regular maintenance is also essential for efficiency. Over a season of use, dirt and dust can build up on key components like the burners and the blower wheel. This buildup forces your furnace to work harder and burn more fuel to produce the same amount of heat. A professional cleaning and tune up can restore your furnace to its peak operating efficiency. This can result in significantly lower heating bills throughout the winter. The energy savings from a well maintained furnace can often pay for the cost of the maintenance service itself.
Finally, furnace maintenance is about reliability and longevity. A furnace is a complex piece of mechanical equipment that benefits from regular care. During a tune up, a technician can spot and address small issues before they turn into major, expensive breakdowns. This preventative approach helps you avoid being left without heat on the coldest night of the year. It also reduces the overall wear and tear on the system. A well maintained furnace will simply last longer than one that is neglected. Regular maintenance protects your investment and postpones the need for a costly replacement.
For the vast majority of homeowners, a furnace should be serviced once per year. This annual frequency is the standard recommendation from all furnace manufacturers, utility companies, and HVAC industry organizations. An annual tune up is sufficient to perform all the necessary safety checks, clean the key components, and ensure the system is ready for the upcoming heating season. Sticking to a consistent yearly schedule is the best way to ensure your furnace remains safe, efficient, and reliable. It is a small investment that provides significant returns in peace of mind and performance.
The best time of year to schedule your furnace maintenance is in the early fall. This is the ideal time to have your system checked out, before you need to rely on it every day. Scheduling your tune up in September or October gives you plenty of time to address any issues that the technician might find. It also allows you to beat the winter rush. Once the first cold snap hits, HVAC companies become very busy with emergency repair calls. By scheduling your maintenance early, you can get a convenient appointment time and ensure your furnace is ready to go when you need it.
Some homeowners wonder if they can skip a year of maintenance, especially if their furnace is relatively new. This is not a recommended practice. Even new systems can develop problems, and annual checks are still required to keep the manufacturer’s warranty valid. Neglecting maintenance for even one season allows dirt to accumulate and can let small problems fester. The cost of a major repair down the road will always be far greater than the cost of a simple annual tune up. Consistency is key when it comes to furnace maintenance.
The heat exchanger is one of the most important and expensive components inside your furnace. It is a metal chamber, or a series of tubes, that gets very hot during the combustion process. Your home’s air is blown across the outside surface of the hot heat exchanger. This is how the air is warmed up before it is distributed through your ductwork. The critical function of the heat exchanger is to keep the air you breathe completely separate from the toxic combustion gases that are produced inside it. It acts as a barrier between your clean air and the exhaust fumes.
Over many years of use, the heat exchanger is exposed to extreme temperature changes. It heats up and cools down thousands of times each winter. This constant expansion and contraction can cause stress on the metal. Over time, this stress can lead to the development of cracks or holes in the heat exchanger’s surface. If this happens, the barrier between your breathing air and the combustion gases is breached. This could allow dangerous carbon monoxide to mix with your home’s air supply. A cracked heat exchanger is a serious safety hazard that requires immediate attention.
Because of this safety risk, a thorough inspection of the heat exchanger is a top priority during any furnace maintenance visit. Our technicians are trained to look for the telltale signs of a failing heat exchanger, such as rust, corrosion, or visible cracks. We use powerful lights and inspection cameras to get a clear view of all its surfaces. If we find a crack, the furnace is considered unsafe to operate and must be shut down. We will then discuss your options, which are typically to replace the heat exchanger or, more commonly for older units, to replace the entire furnace.
Yes, absolutely. Regular furnace maintenance can have a direct and measurable impact on your winter heating bills. An unmaintained furnace slowly loses its efficiency over time. The primary reason for this is the accumulation of dirt and dust on critical components. For example, when the burners become dirty, they do not combust the fuel as cleanly or completely. This means you are burning the same amount of fuel but getting less heat out of it. A professional cleaning restores the burners to their optimal condition, ensuring you get the most heat from every unit of fuel.
The cleanliness of the blower motor assembly also plays a huge role in energy consumption. The blower motor is one of the biggest electricity users in your HVAC system. When the blower wheel gets caked with a layer of dust, it cannot move air as effectively. It has to spin faster and work harder to push the same amount of air through your ductwork. This can significantly increase your furnace’s electricity usage. A thorough cleaning of the blower wheel during a tune up allows it to move air with less effort, reducing electricity consumption.
Finally, a technician can make small adjustments during a tune up that improve efficiency. For example, ensuring the gas pressure is set correctly allows the furnace to operate at its designed efficiency level. By combining a thorough cleaning with professional tuning, we can often restore a furnace to its factory fresh performance. This peak efficiency translates directly into lower fuel and electricity consumption, which means more money in your pocket at the end of the month. The savings on your utility bills can make the maintenance service a very cost effective decision.
The best practice is to schedule maintenance annually, even if you do not notice any specific problems. However, there are several warning signs that can indicate your furnace is overdue for a tune up or may need a repair. One of the most common signs is an unusual increase in your heating bills. If your bills are suddenly much higher than they were in previous years, it is often a sign that your furnace is losing efficiency and needs to be serviced. Another sign is uneven heating or hot and cold spots in your home, which can indicate an airflow problem.
You should also pay attention to any strange noises coming from your furnace. Healthy furnaces should operate relatively quietly. If you start to hear sounds like rattling, popping, squealing, or grinding, it is a clear indication that something is wrong. These noises could be caused by a loose panel, a problem with the ignition, or a failing motor. Do not ignore these sounds, as they can be precursors to a more serious breakdown. A maintenance technician can diagnose the cause of the noise and fix it before it gets worse.
Other warning signs include the furnace cycling on and off more frequently than usual, or a pilot light that is yellow instead of blue. A yellow pilot flame indicates a combustion problem that needs to be addressed. If you or your family members experience frequent headaches, dizziness, or nausea only when you are at home, it could be a sign of a carbon monoxide leak. This is an emergency situation. You should leave the house immediately, call 911, and then call us to inspect your furnace. Being attentive to these signs can help you catch problems early.
Yes, in almost all cases, furnace manufacturers require you to have your system professionally serviced every year to keep the parts warranty valid. Your furnace comes with a warranty from the manufacturer that covers the cost of parts if they fail due to a defect. This is a valuable protection that can save you a lot of money on a major repair. However, the manufacturer provides this warranty with the expectation that you will take proper care of the equipment. They know that neglect is a leading cause of component failure.
To protect themselves from claims caused by a lack of maintenance, they make annual service a condition of the warranty. If a major part like the inducer motor or the circuit board fails while the unit is under warranty, you will need to file a claim. The manufacturer has the right to ask for your service records. If you cannot provide proof that the furnace has been maintained annually by a qualified HVAC contractor, they can legally deny your warranty claim. This would leave you responsible for the full cost of the part and the labor.
This is why it is so important to not only get your furnace serviced every year but also to keep the receipts and service reports. After every maintenance visit we perform, we provide you with a detailed invoice and a report of our findings. You should keep these documents in a safe place. They are your proof that you have fulfilled your obligations under the warranty agreement. Investing in an annual tune up is a small price to pay to protect yourself from potentially thousands of dollars in uncovered repair costs.
There are a few simple maintenance tasks that every homeowner can and should do. The most important of these is checking and changing the furnace filter. A clogged filter is the number one cause of furnace problems. It restricts airflow, which makes your furnace work harder, reduces efficiency, and can cause the system to overheat and shut down. You should check your filter every month during the heating season and replace it whenever it is dirty. For most homes, this means a new filter every one to three months. This is the single best thing you can do for your furnace.
Another simple task is to keep the area around your furnace clean and clear. Your furnace needs to have adequate airflow around it to operate properly. Do not store boxes, furniture, or other items right next to the furnace. You should keep at least three feet of clear space around the unit on all sides. Also, never store flammable materials like gasoline, paint thinners, or cleaning supplies anywhere near your furnace. This is a serious fire hazard. These simple housekeeping tasks are an important part of furnace safety and maintenance.
However, these DIY tasks do not replace the need for a professional annual tune up. A technician has the training, tools, and expertise to perform a much more comprehensive service. We can safely work on the gas and electrical components of your furnace. We have the specialized equipment to test for carbon monoxide, check gas pressure, and inspect the internal workings of the heat exchanger. These are tasks that are dangerous for an untrained person to attempt. A professional tune up provides a level of safety inspection and technical adjustment that you simply cannot perform on your own.
A professional furnace tune up from Barney’s Heating and Air is a comprehensive service that covers all aspects of your system’s safety, efficiency, and performance. Our technician will follow a detailed checklist to ensure nothing is missed. The service always begins with a thorough safety inspection. This includes a close examination of the heat exchanger for cracks, an inspection of the venting system for blockages, and testing of all safety controls. We also perform an electronic carbon monoxide test to ensure your furnace is not producing unsafe levels of this gas. Your family’s safety is our first priority.
Next, we focus on cleaning and efficiency. We will remove and clean the burner assembly and the ignition system. We will inspect and clean the blower motor components to ensure proper airflow. We will check your air filter and replace it if you have a new one available. The interior and exterior of the furnace cabinet will also be cleaned. These cleaning tasks are essential for restoring your furnace to its peak operating efficiency, which helps to lower your energy bills. A clean furnace is an efficient furnace.
The final part of the service involves testing and tuning. We will check and tighten all electrical connections. We will measure and adjust the gas pressure to the manufacturer’s specifications. The thermostat will be checked for proper operation and calibration. We will then run the furnace through a complete cycle to monitor its performance. We will measure the temperature rise to ensure it is within the proper range. At the end of the visit, we will provide you with a full report on your furnace’s condition and answer any questions you may have.
