A/C had been out for a couple days. Heat index 105° , 90 ° in house. I called 15 + HVAC companies and the earliest appointment time anybody could come was a week away. I called Barneys . He shot me straight and told me " I'll get you up and going today but it's going to be in the evening." He showed up about 7 pm which is perfectly fine as it was hot. He fixed the problem in 15 mins ( needed refrigerant ) He charged a very fair price. He stands by his word. LIFESAVER!! VERY COOL NOW!!!

I contacted them and within 45 minutes Jacob arrived ready and prepared to look at our A/c unit. Fair priced, friendly, efficient and careful to not misdiagnose the issue.
Excellent service! I called After 5 PM with a down AC unit looking for a diagnostic visit with possible fix. He offered same day and next day options. When he came out and completed the diagnostic, he said he could fix it right away. It Took him less than 30 minutes to get my unit running. Plus it was extremely affordable! Called the morning after July 4th and they were able to come out right away. He was prompt, courteous, and communicated updates from the time I requested him to come out to arrival and the fix. Needed service in a pinch and this company was there to help out immediately. If you’re looking to support a small, local business, and get it done right, look no further!
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! My A/C went out late Friday night and not many companies were wanting to help and look at my unit until after the weekend and holiday was over, but Barney’s heating and air responded ASAP, and was here first thing in the morning on Saturday! The technician gave me an exact time and was here on time, other companies gave me a big time frame/window 8am-6pm and that just didn’t work for us. This company is affordable and willing to work with you. Definitely will call them again!! Thank you!
Didn't stopped coming to work on it till it was fully fixed highly recommend
Service was AMAZING!!! Especially on a weekend. Found the issue right away and had our A/C running again. I would highly recommend Barney's Heating and Air over anyone I've dealt with in clarksville. Price was great. We are enrolling in his service care for twice a year service for a great price!!!! Again I would recommend him over anyone!!!
Barney and his team was professional, on time, and worked with the other foreman (foundation repair) on site in order to get my foundation repaired correctly and removed, then reinstalled new ductwork after the foundation was repaired. Due to his efforts, I was able to have 2 projects done at the same time and for a fraction of the cost in a total of 2 days. Highly recommend.
Technician knew immediately what the problem was, had the needed parts with him, and fixed the problem in less than an hour.
This isn’t just a review, it’s a debt of personal gratitude. These guys came out and replaced the HVAC system in my rental house in absolutely no time flat. They were able to work with me in the kind of way humans should work with one other, when it really counts. I am extremely grateful for their help with this project, and they have 100% earned all of my future business - barre none
First time (in this house) getting our heat pump inspected. Technician was detailed in explaining what was both good & bad about our 12 year-old system. He explained that our system was still functional but also showed us a part that might fail in the future. He tested the part in our presence & gave us a fair price for replacement (which we did). We were comfortable enough with the service that we are likely to purchase a service/maintenance agreement this Fall.
Excellent service from an honest professional. No one likes having to get an AC replaced, but Barney’s makes it less painful. Extremely responsive (at any time you need him), he will be honest, fair, and provide you a range of options without the up-sale you’d get elsewhere. His work is top notch quality, this is the 3rd time we have used him for our rentals and will continue to do so in the future. Highly recommend for your AC/HVAC needs.
PLUMBERS, Too! I just bought a house and didn’t know the pipes were clogged, the tub had a slow flow, and that the faucets were offset. In addition to heating and cooling, Jake has plumbers on hand. He and his crew did a good job, were friendly, and easy to communicate with.
The communication, fast response, and customer service is what will bring me back. I will definitely call them again to schedule my yearly unit cleaning and any repairs that come up. Highly recommend! Thank you guys!

Local company with great working knowledge. We had a heat bank out in our furnace which they troubleshot and fixed within the week (had to order parts). Heat is now working in the house and we appreciate the service!
I was having problems with my HVAC system and I called these guys to come check it out. Bobby and Jacob are very down to Earth guys. Bobby was very upfront about what issues I had with my system and gave me recommendations without feeling like they were trying to push anything on me. I was impressed with the knowledge he had and how fair their pricing was. I'm a single woman that lives alone with my children and I did not once feel uncomfortable with them or feel like they were trying to get over on me. They ended up installing a new unit in my home and did an amazing job. I have not had one issue with it since. I would def. recommend this company to anyone I know! Thank you guys!!

Generator Installation
The generator installation process begins with a detailed consultation and site assessment at your Clarksville home. Our experts will discuss your specific power needs with you. We consider which essential circuits you want to back up, such as refrigeration, lighting, medical equipment, and your HVAC system. Based on this assessment, we calculate the appropriate generator size, measured in kilowatts, to ensure it can handle the electrical load without issue. We also help you choose the best location for the generator. The location must comply with local codes regarding distance from windows, doors, and property lines. This initial planning phase is crucial for a successful and safe installation.
Once we have determined the right generator and location, we prepare the site for installation. This typically involves pouring a level concrete pad that will serve as a stable and secure base for the generator unit. A solid foundation is essential to minimize vibration and ensure the longevity of the equipment. We handle all aspects of this site preparation. Our team ensures the area is properly graded and that the concrete is cured before the generator is set in place. This meticulous preparation prevents future issues and is a key part of our professional installation service. We take no shortcuts in this critical step.
The next step is the physical placement of the generator and the installation of the automatic transfer switch (ATS). The generator unit is carefully moved onto the prepared concrete pad and securely bolted down. The ATS is the brain of the system; it is a sophisticated electrical panel that is installed near your main circuit breaker box. This switch constantly monitors the flow of power from the utility grid. Our licensed electricians will expertly wire the ATS into your home’s electrical system. This is a complex task that must be done correctly to ensure the safety and proper functioning of the entire system.
With the generator and ATS in place, we move on to connecting the fuel source. Most whole home generators run on either natural gas or liquid propane (LP). If your home has a natural gas line, our certified technicians will run a dedicated fuel line from your meter to the generator. We ensure this line is properly sized and installed according to all safety codes. If you will be using propane, we will coordinate with a local propane supplier to have a tank installed. We then run the line from the tank to the generator. A secure and leak free fuel connection is absolutely critical for safe operation.
After the fuel line is connected, our electricians will complete the wiring between the generator, the automatic transfer switch, and your home’s main electrical panel. This involves running electrical conduit from the generator unit to the ATS. We carefully connect the power and control wiring that allows the system to communicate and function automatically. All electrical work is performed neatly and in strict accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and any local regulations. We take great pride in the quality and safety of our electrical work. It is a cornerstone of our professional reputation in the Clarksville area.
The final stage of the installation process is commissioning and testing the system. Once all connections are made, we will start the generator and perform a complete operational test. We simulate a power outage to verify that the automatic transfer switch functions correctly. We watch as it disconnects your home from the grid and signals the generator to start. We then confirm that power is restored to your designated circuits within seconds. We will also test all the generator’s safety features and shutdown mechanisms. This full system test ensures everything is working exactly as it should.
Before we consider the job complete, we take the time to walk you through the entire system. We will show you how the generator and automatic transfer switch work. We will also explain the unit’s control panel, any maintenance indicators, and the recommended service schedule. Our goal is for you to feel completely comfortable and confident with your new backup power system. We will answer all of your questions and provide you with all the necessary documentation and warranty information. At Barney’s Heating and Air, a successful installation ends with a fully satisfied and well informed customer.

Most Common Generator Installation Questions
Investing in a whole home generator is a significant decision that brings security and convenience. It’s natural for homeowners to have many questions about the installation process, the equipment, and how it all works. Understanding these details is key to making a confident and informed choice for your home.
An automatic transfer switch, or ATS, is the essential component that makes your backup generator system truly automated and safe. Think of the ATS as the central nervous system of your generator setup. It is an intelligent electrical panel that is installed next to your main circuit breaker. Its primary job is to constantly monitor the electrical power coming into your home from the utility company. The moment it detects a power outage or a significant drop in voltage, it springs into action. This constant monitoring is what provides the seamless transition from grid power to generator power without any manual intervention from you.
When the ATS senses a power failure, it performs two critical tasks simultaneously. First, it completely disconnects your home’s electrical system from the external utility grid. This is an absolutely vital safety feature called isolation. It prevents the electricity from your generator from flowing back out onto the utility lines, a dangerous situation known as “backfeeding.” Backfeeding can electrocute utility workers who are trying to restore power, thinking the lines are dead. Second, after isolating your home, the ATS sends a signal to the generator, telling it to start up and prepare to take the load.
Once the generator is running at the correct speed and voltage, the automatic transfer switch performs its final job. It switches your home’s electrical panel over to receive power from the generator. This entire process, from the power going out to your generator powering your home, happens automatically within a matter of seconds. You do not have to do anything. When the utility power is restored, the ATS senses this as well. It will then switch your home back to grid power and signal the generator to shut down, all automatically. A generator cannot be safely or legally connected to your home without a properly installed ATS.
Choosing the right size generator is the most critical step in ensuring your backup power system meets your needs. Generator size is not measured in physical dimensions but in its power output, which is rated in kilowatts (kW). A generator that is too small will not be able to power all your desired appliances and can be damaged from overloading. A generator that is excessively large will be inefficient and cost more than necessary to purchase and operate. The key is to find the perfect balance for your specific requirements. Our process at Barney’s Heating and Air is designed to help you do just that.
The first step in sizing a generator is to make a list of all the appliances and systems you want to power during an outage. This includes essentials like your refrigerator, freezer, and lighting. You should also consider comfort items like your furnace or air conditioner, well pump, sump pump, and medical equipment. For each item on your list, we will determine its power consumption in watts. It is important to consider both the “running watts” an appliance uses continuously and the “starting watts” or “surge watts” it needs just to turn on. Motors in appliances like refrigerators and air conditioners require a large surge of power to start up.
Once we have a complete list of your desired loads and their power requirements, we perform a professional load calculation. This calculation totals all the running watts and accounts for the highest starting watts of your largest appliances. This gives us the total kilowatt capacity your generator needs to have to power your home without being overloaded. We will walk you through different scenarios, such as powering only essential circuits versus powering the entire house. This allows you to make an informed decision that balances your needs with your budget, ensuring you get a generator that is perfectly sized for your Clarksville home.
The placement of your new generator is governed by a strict set of safety codes and regulations to protect you and your property. These rules are primarily designed to prevent the risk of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning. Generators produce deadly, odorless carbon monoxide in their engine exhaust, so they must be located outdoors in a well ventilated area. They can never be installed in a garage, basement, or any enclosed space. Our installation experts at Barney’s Heating and Air are well versed in all national and local Clarksville codes and will help you find a compliant and convenient location.
There are specific clearance requirements that must be met. A generator must typically be installed at least five feet away from any door, window, or air intake vent of your home. This prevents the engine exhaust from being drawn back into the house. There are also clearance rules regarding proximity to combustible materials, such as wooden decks or siding. Additionally, local zoning ordinances will dictate how far the generator must be from your property lines. We will perform a thorough site survey to identify all potential locations that meet these critical safety setbacks.
Beyond the safety codes, we also consider practical factors when choosing a location. We look for a spot that is relatively level to minimize the amount of site preparation needed for the concrete pad. We also consider the proximity to your gas meter and main electrical panel to keep the installation costs for fuel lines and wiring as low as possible. Finally, we will discuss aesthetics and noise with you. While modern generators are quieter than older models, we can help you choose a location that minimizes the sound impact on your outdoor living spaces and your neighbors.
Yes, in almost all municipalities, including Clarksville and the surrounding areas, a permit is required for the installation of a whole home standby generator. This is because the installation involves both significant electrical work and, in most cases, gas line plumbing. These systems directly impact the safety of your home, and the permit process ensures that the work is performed correctly and according to all applicable building codes. The permit serves as a formal approval from your local building department to proceed with the project. Attempting to install a generator without a permit can lead to significant fines and may require you to remove the unpermitted work.
The permitting process involves submitting a detailed plan of the installation to the local authorities for review. This plan typically includes electrical diagrams showing how the automatic transfer switch will be wired into your home’s system. It also includes a site plan showing the proposed location of the generator and its compliance with all clearance and setback requirements. If a new gas line is being run, a plumbing plan will also be required. At Barney’s Heating and Air, we handle the entire permitting process for you. We prepare and submit all the necessary paperwork and plans to ensure your project is fully compliant.
After the installation is complete, the permit requires a final inspection by a city or county building inspector. The inspector will visit your home to review our work and ensure that every aspect of the installation meets the code requirements. They will check the electrical connections, the fuel line installation, and the generator’s placement. This third party inspection provides an extra layer of quality control and peace of mind for you as a homeowner. It is the final step in confirming that your new generator system is installed safely and correctly. We coordinate this inspection and ensure our work passes with flying colors.
The entire process of installing a whole home generator, from the initial consultation to the final inspection, can take several weeks, but the on site work is much shorter. The initial phases involve the consultation, equipment selection, and the permit application process. Securing the permit from the local building department can sometimes take one to three weeks, depending on their current workload. Once the permit is approved and we have the generator unit and automatic transfer switch from the manufacturer, we can schedule the on site installation at your Clarksville home. We keep you informed at every step of this preliminary process.
The actual on site installation work is typically completed in one to three days. The exact timeline depends on the complexity of the job. Factors that can influence the duration include the amount of site preparation needed for the concrete pad, the length and difficulty of the electrical and gas line runs, and the specific requirements of your home’s existing systems. Our team at Barney’s Heating and Air works efficiently and coordinates the different trades, electrical and gas, to streamline the process. We strive to minimize the disruption to your daily routine as much as possible during the installation days.
On the first day, we often focus on the exterior work, such as preparing and pouring the concrete pad and setting the generator in place. The second day might involve the interior work, such as installing the automatic transfer switch and running the necessary wiring and fuel lines. The final day is typically reserved for making the final connections, commissioning the system, and performing the comprehensive operational tests. After our work is done, we will schedule the final inspection with the local building official, which usually happens within a few days of project completion.
Just like a car engine, a generator’s engine requires regular maintenance to ensure it remains reliable and ready to operate when you need it most. Routine maintenance is the key to a long and trouble free service life for your investment. Most generator manufacturers recommend a schedule of preventative maintenance that includes regular inspections and service. Neglecting this maintenance can lead to a failure to start during a power outage, which defeats the entire purpose of having a generator. At Barney’s Heating and Air, we offer comprehensive maintenance plans to keep your generator in peak condition.
A typical maintenance schedule includes several key tasks. The engine oil and oil filter should be changed regularly, usually once a year or after a specific number of run hours, whichever comes first. The air filter also needs to be inspected and replaced to ensure the engine can breathe properly. The spark plugs should be checked and replaced as needed to guarantee reliable starting. Our technicians will also inspect the battery, cleaning the terminals and testing its charge to make sure it has the power to crank the engine when called upon. A weak battery is one of the most common reasons for a generator failing to start.
In addition to the engine service, our maintenance visits include a full system check. We will inspect all the electrical connections, wiring, and the automatic transfer switch for any signs of wear or corrosion. We will clean the generator unit, ensuring that all air vents are clear of debris. Most importantly, we will perform a full operational test, simulating a power outage to verify that the generator starts, the transfer switch operates correctly, and the system performs exactly as it should. This regular testing and maintenance provides the ultimate peace of mind that your backup power system is ready for any emergency.
Whether a generator will power your entire house depends on the size of the generator you choose to install. There are essentially two main approaches to a backup power installation. The first option is to install a “whole house” generator. This is a larger kilowatt unit that is sized, through a detailed load calculation, to have enough capacity to run virtually everything in your home simultaneously. This includes large appliances like your central air conditioner, electric range, and clothes dryer. A whole house solution provides the most convenience and ensures that your lifestyle is completely uninterrupted during a power outage.
The second option is to install a smaller generator that provides power only to your home’s “essential circuits.” In this type of installation, the automatic transfer switch is wired to a new sub panel that contains only the circuits you have deemed most important. This typically includes things like your refrigerator and freezer, the furnace fan, a well pump, a sump pump, and selected lights and outlets. This approach is more budget friendly as it allows you to install a smaller, less expensive generator. It provides the security of knowing your critical systems will remain online, even if you cannot run every single appliance in your home.
During our initial consultation, we will have a detailed discussion with you about these two options. We will help you weigh the pros and cons of each approach based on your family’s needs and your budget. We can perform load calculations for both a whole house scenario and an essential circuits scenario. This will give you a clear understanding of the generator sizes and the associated costs for each option. Our goal at Barney’s Heating and Air is to help you select a solution that provides the right level of power and security for your Clarksville home.
The vast majority of residential standby generators are designed to run on one of two common fuel sources: natural gas or liquid propane (LP). The choice between these two fuels often depends on what is available at your property. Natural gas is the most convenient and cost effective option if your home is already connected to a municipal gas supply. The generator can be connected directly to your existing gas line, providing a virtually unlimited fuel source. You never have to worry about refueling, as the generator will draw fuel from the utility line whenever it needs to run.
If your home does not have access to natural gas, liquid propane is an excellent alternative. For this setup, a dedicated LP tank will be installed on your property by a licensed propane supplier. The generator is then connected to this tank. The main consideration with propane is that you have a finite supply of fuel stored on site. You will need to monitor the fuel level in the tank and have it refilled periodically by your propane company. The size of the tank will determine how long your generator can run before a refill is needed. We can help you calculate your expected run time and select an appropriately sized tank.
Both natural gas and propane are clean burning fuels that are reliable and readily available in the Clarksville area. They are generally more stable for long term storage than gasoline or diesel, which is why they are the standard for permanent standby generators. During our site assessment, we will determine which fuel source is the best fit for your home and your needs. Our certified technicians are licensed to install both natural gas and propane fuel lines, ensuring a safe and code compliant connection for your new generator system.
