A/C had been out for a couple days. Heat index 105° , 90 ° in house. I called 15 + HVAC companies and the earliest appointment time anybody could come was a week away. I called Barneys . He shot me straight and told me " I'll get you up and going today but it's going to be in the evening." He showed up about 7 pm which is perfectly fine as it was hot. He fixed the problem in 15 mins ( needed refrigerant ) He charged a very fair price. He stands by his word. LIFESAVER!! VERY COOL NOW!!!

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! My A/C went out late Friday night and not many companies were wanting to help and look at my unit until after the weekend and holiday was over, but Barney’s heating and air responded ASAP, and was here first thing in the morning on Saturday! The technician gave me an exact time and was here on time, other companies gave me a big time frame/window 8am-6pm and that just didn’t work for us. This company is affordable and willing to work with you. Definitely will call them again!! Thank you!
Didn't stopped coming to work on it till it was fully fixed highly recommend
Service was AMAZING!!! Especially on a weekend. Found the issue right away and had our A/C running again. I would highly recommend Barney's Heating and Air over anyone I've dealt with in clarksville. Price was great. We are enrolling in his service care for twice a year service for a great price!!!! Again I would recommend him over anyone!!!
Barney and his team was professional, on time, and worked with the other foreman (foundation repair) on site in order to get my foundation repaired correctly and removed, then reinstalled new ductwork after the foundation was repaired. Due to his efforts, I was able to have 2 projects done at the same time and for a fraction of the cost in a total of 2 days. Highly recommend.
Technician knew immediately what the problem was, had the needed parts with him, and fixed the problem in less than an hour.
This isn’t just a review, it’s a debt of personal gratitude. These guys came out and replaced the HVAC system in my rental house in absolutely no time flat. They were able to work with me in the kind of way humans should work with one other, when it really counts. I am extremely grateful for their help with this project, and they have 100% earned all of my future business - barre none
First time (in this house) getting our heat pump inspected. Technician was detailed in explaining what was both good & bad about our 12 year-old system. He explained that our system was still functional but also showed us a part that might fail in the future. He tested the part in our presence & gave us a fair price for replacement (which we did). We were comfortable enough with the service that we are likely to purchase a service/maintenance agreement this Fall.
Excellent service from an honest professional. No one likes having to get an AC replaced, but Barney’s makes it less painful. Extremely responsive (at any time you need him), he will be honest, fair, and provide you a range of options without the up-sale you’d get elsewhere. His work is top notch quality, this is the 3rd time we have used him for our rentals and will continue to do so in the future. Highly recommend for your AC/HVAC needs.
PLUMBERS, Too! I just bought a house and didn’t know the pipes were clogged, the tub had a slow flow, and that the faucets were offset. In addition to heating and cooling, Jake has plumbers on hand. He and his crew did a good job, were friendly, and easy to communicate with.
The communication, fast response, and customer service is what will bring me back. I will definitely call them again to schedule my yearly unit cleaning and any repairs that come up. Highly recommend! Thank you guys!

Heat Pump Installation
The heat pump installation process begins with a comprehensive in home consultation and load calculation. This is the most critical step to ensure your new system performs efficiently and effectively. Our comfort specialists will visit your Clarksville home to measure your space and assess factors like insulation levels, window quality, and layout. Using this data, we perform a Manual J load calculation, which is the industry standard for accurately determining the precise heating and cooling capacity your home requires. This scientific approach prevents the common problems of oversizing or undersizing a unit. An improperly sized system will lead to poor comfort, high energy bills, and a shortened lifespan.
Based on the load calculation, we will help you select the perfect heat pump system for your home and budget. We will explain the different efficiency ratings, such as SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2) for cooling and HSPF2 (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor 2) for heating. We will also discuss various features available on modern heat pumps, like variable speed compressors and smart thermostat compatibility. Our goal is to provide you with all the information you need to choose a system that will deliver optimal comfort and energy savings for years to come. We partner with leading manufacturers to offer a wide range of high quality and reliable equipment.
Once you have selected your new system, our installation team will schedule a day to begin the work. The first step on installation day is the safe removal and disposal of your old HVAC equipment. We will carefully disconnect and remove the old outdoor condenser and the indoor air handler or furnace. We handle the environmentally responsible disposal of the old unit, including the safe reclamation of any refrigerant, according to EPA regulations. We take great care to protect your home and property during this removal process, using drop cloths and protective coverings as needed.
Next, we prepare the site for the new equipment. This involves installing a new, level composite pad for the outdoor heat pump unit to sit on. A solid, level base is essential for quiet operation and proper drainage. Inside your home, our technicians will prepare the space for the new indoor air handler. This may involve making modifications to the existing ductwork connections to ensure a perfect, airtight fit. Proper airflow is critical for the efficiency and performance of the new system, so we pay meticulous attention to the ductwork interface.
The core of the installation is setting the new equipment and connecting the refrigerant lines. The new outdoor heat pump and indoor air handler are carefully put into place. Our technicians then expertly run a set of copper refrigerant lines, known as a line set, to connect the two units. This process, called brazing, involves creating high integrity, leak proof solder joints. After connecting the lines, we perform a multi step process to ensure the refrigerant circuit is clean and dry. We flush the lines with nitrogen and then use a powerful vacuum pump to remove all air and moisture before charging the system with the precise amount of refrigerant.
With the mechanical components in place, our technicians will complete the electrical and control wiring. This involves running high and low voltage wiring to connect the outdoor unit, indoor unit, and your new thermostat. We install a new electrical disconnect box near the outdoor unit for safety. All electrical work is performed in strict accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) to ensure your system is safe and reliable. We then install your new smart or programmable thermostat in a central location in your home, away from direct sunlight or drafts, for accurate temperature readings.
The final and most important step is the commissioning of your new heat pump system. This is not just turning it on; it is a detailed process of testing and calibration. We will start the system in both heating and cooling modes to ensure it is functioning correctly. We use specialized gauges and sensors to measure refrigerant pressures, temperatures, and airflow. We then make fine tune adjustments to the refrigerant charge and fan speeds to optimize the system’s performance for your specific home. This meticulous commissioning process ensures you achieve the maximum efficiency and comfort your new system is designed to provide.

Most Common Heat Pump Installation Questions
A heat pump is a significant investment in your home’s comfort and energy efficiency. It’s a versatile technology that provides both heating and cooling in a single unit. Before moving forward with an installation, it’s wise to understand how they work, the benefits they offer, and the details of the installation process.
A heat pump works on a brilliantly simple and efficient principle: it moves heat from one place to another. It does not create heat by burning fuel like a furnace does. In the summer, it functions exactly like a standard air conditioner. The indoor unit, the air handler, absorbs heat from your home’s air and transfers it to the refrigerant. This refrigerant is then pumped to the outdoor unit, where a coil and fan release the collected heat into the outside air. This process continues until your home reaches the desired temperature set on your thermostat, leaving you with cool, comfortable indoor air.
In the winter, the process cleverly reverses. The outdoor unit absorbs heat from the outside air, even when it feels cold to us. There is always some thermal energy available in the air until the temperature drops to absolute zero. The refrigerant in the outdoor coil absorbs this ambient heat. The refrigerant is then compressed, which intensely increases its temperature. This hot refrigerant is then pumped to the indoor air handler. As your home’s air blows across the indoor coil, it picks up this heat and distributes it through your ductwork, warming your home efficiently.
This ability to both heat and cool makes a heat pump an incredibly versatile and all in one solution for year round comfort. The reversal of the refrigerant flow is controlled by a component called a reversing valve, which is the key piece of technology that differentiates a heat pump from a standard air conditioner. Because it is moving existing heat rather than creating it from scratch, a heat pump can heat your home with remarkable energy efficiency, especially in the mild winter conditions we often experience in Clarksville, TN.
The primary benefit of installing a heat pump is its exceptional energy efficiency, which translates directly into lower utility bills. When it comes to heating, a heat pump can be up to three or four times more efficient than a traditional electric resistance furnace. This is because it uses electricity to move heat, not to generate it. This efficiency is especially pronounced in climates with moderate winters, like ours in Tennessee. Over the lifespan of the system, the energy savings you will accumulate can be substantial, often helping to offset the initial installation cost.
Another major benefit is the convenience of having a single system for both heating and cooling. Instead of maintaining two separate pieces of equipment, a furnace and an air conditioner, you have one unit that does both jobs. This simplifies maintenance and saves space. Modern heat pumps provide excellent, consistent comfort, especially variable speed models. They can make small, continuous adjustments to their output to maintain a very steady indoor temperature, eliminating the wide temperature swings that can be common with older, single stage systems. This results in a more comfortable and less drafty home environment.
Heat pumps are also a more environmentally friendly choice for home comfort. Since they do not burn fossil fuels like natural gas or oil to create heat, they do not produce any carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases at your home. They are an all electric technology. When paired with an electricity grid that is increasingly powered by renewable sources like solar and wind, heat pumps can significantly reduce your home’s overall carbon footprint. By choosing a high efficiency heat pump, you are making a positive choice for both your wallet and the environment.
This is a very common and important question for anyone considering a heat pump in a climate that sees freezing temperatures. The answer is yes, modern heat pumps are designed to work effectively in cold weather, but their efficiency does decrease as the temperature drops. As the outside air gets colder, there is less ambient heat available for the outdoor unit to absorb. The heat pump has to work harder to extract enough heat to warm your home, which consumes more electricity. However, today’s advanced heat pump technology can still produce heat efficiently even when temperatures are near or slightly below freezing.
Most heat pump systems installed in climates like ours are paired with a supplementary or auxiliary heat source. This is typically a set of electric resistance heat strips located inside the indoor air handler. Your smart thermostat will automatically activate these heat strips to assist the heat pump when two conditions are met. The first is during a defrost cycle. The second is when the outdoor temperature drops to a point where the heat pump can no longer meet the heating demand of the house on its own. This “balance point” is typically somewhere between 25 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on the specific system and your home’s insulation.
This dual fuel approach ensures that your home remains warm and comfortable no matter how cold it gets outside. The heat pump operates as your primary, high efficiency heat source for the vast majority of the heating season. The less efficient electric heat strips are only used as needed for short periods during the coldest weather. This strategy provides the best of both worlds: incredible energy efficiency throughout the milder parts of winter and reliable, powerful heating performance during the coldest snaps. You never have to worry about being left in the cold.
SEER2 and HSPF2 are the official energy efficiency ratings used to measure the performance of modern heat pumps and air conditioners. Understanding these ratings is key to choosing a system that will save you money. SEER2 stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2. It is a measure of how efficiently the system operates in cooling mode over the course of an entire cooling season. The higher the SEER2 rating, the more efficient the unit is at cooling your home. A higher SEER2 rating means the unit uses less electricity to remove the same amount of heat, resulting in lower summer energy bills.
HSPF2 stands for Heating Seasonal Performance Factor 2. This rating measures the efficiency of the heat pump when it is in heating mode. Similar to SEER2, it is calculated over an entire heating season. A higher HSPF2 rating indicates a more efficient heating performance. This means the unit can produce more heat for every kilowatt hour of electricity it consumes. Choosing a heat pump with a high HSPF2 rating is particularly important for maximizing your energy savings during the winter months. It is the most important efficiency metric to consider for winter performance.
The “2” in SEER2 and HSPF2 indicates that these are updated testing standards that went into effect in 2023. These new standards are designed to better reflect real world operating conditions than the previous SEER and HSPF metrics. They use higher external static pressure conditions during testing to more accurately simulate the resistance of a typical home’s ductwork system. When you are comparing new heat pump models, you should always compare their SEER2 and HSPF2 ratings. The federal government sets minimum efficiency standards, but choosing a system with ratings well above the minimum will deliver greater long term energy savings.
A standard, straightforward heat pump installation in a residential home is typically completed within one full day. Our professional installation team at Barney’s Heating and Air follows a well organized and efficient process to minimize the disruption to your home and family. We usually arrive in the morning to begin the process of removing your old HVAC equipment. We then proceed with preparing the site, setting the new outdoor and indoor units, and running the necessary refrigerant lines and electrical wiring. Our goal is to have your new system up and running by the end of the day.
However, some more complex installations can extend into a second day. Factors that might increase the installation time include the need for significant ductwork modifications or repairs. If your existing duct system is in poor condition or needs to be resized to accommodate the new heat pump, this will add time to the project. Similarly, if the installation requires long or difficult runs for the refrigerant lines or electrical conduit, this can also extend the timeline. We will be able to provide you with a very accurate time estimate for your specific project during our initial in home consultation.
When we provide you with an installation schedule, we stick to it. We understand that being without heating or cooling can be an inconvenience, so we work diligently to complete the job as quickly as possible without ever compromising on the quality of our workmanship. Our technicians will keep you informed of their progress throughout the day. Before we leave, we will ensure the work area is thoroughly cleaned up, and we will walk you through the operation of your new system and thermostat, ensuring you are completely comfortable with your new investment.
Whether you need to replace your ductwork when installing a new heat pump depends entirely on the condition, size, and design of your existing ducts. In many cases, if the ductwork is in good condition, properly sized for the new system, and well sealed, it can be used with the new heat pump without any issues. During our initial consultation, a crucial part of our assessment is a thorough inspection of your home’s duct system. We will check for any leaks, disconnected sections, poor insulation, or signs of damage that could compromise the performance of your new, high efficiency equipment.
However, it is very common to find that existing ductwork is not adequate for a modern heat pump. The number one problem we encounter is leaky ducts. Leaks in your ductwork can account for up to 30% of your home’s energy loss, forcing your new system to work harder and driving up your utility bills. If we find significant leakage, we will recommend professional duct sealing. Another common issue is improperly sized ducts. If the ducts are too small, they can restrict airflow, which reduces efficiency, creates noise, and puts unnecessary strain on the heat pump’s components, potentially leading to premature failure.
If our inspection reveals that your ductwork is severely undersized, poorly designed, or in a state of disrepair, we will recommend replacement. Installing a brand new, high efficiency heat pump and connecting it to a faulty duct system is a recipe for disappointment. You will not get the comfort or the energy savings you are paying for. While replacing ductwork does add to the initial project cost, it is a worthwhile investment that ensures your entire HVAC system works together in harmony. This guarantees you will receive the full benefit of your new heat pump’s performance and efficiency for years to come.
A dual fuel heat pump system, also known as a hybrid heat system, is a highly efficient and versatile home comfort solution that combines two different technologies. It consists of an electric heat pump paired with a gas furnace, instead of the standard electric air handler with heat strips. This setup is designed to provide optimal heating efficiency across the entire range of winter temperatures. The system is controlled by an intelligent thermostat that can automatically switch between the two heat sources based on outdoor conditions and fuel costs. This ensures you are always using the most economical heating method available.
Here is how it works: for most of the heating season, during milder winter weather, the electric heat pump will heat your home. The heat pump is the more energy efficient of the two systems in these conditions, so it is used as the primary heat source to keep your utility bills low. However, as the outdoor temperature drops significantly, typically into the 20s, the heat pump’s efficiency decreases. At a pre determined temperature, called the balance point, the smart thermostat will automatically turn off the heat pump and switch over to the gas furnace.
The gas furnace then takes over to provide powerful and reliable heating during the coldest parts of the winter. Natural gas or propane furnaces are very effective at producing high levels of heat in frigid temperatures. This dual fuel strategy allows you to enjoy the incredible efficiency of a heat pump for the majority of the year, while still having the robust heating power of a gas furnace as a backup for the coldest days. It truly offers the best of both worlds, maximizing both comfort and energy savings, and is an excellent option for homeowners in the Clarksville area who have access to natural gas.
The cost of a new heat pump installation can vary widely, as it depends on several important factors. The most significant factor influencing the price is the size and efficiency of the unit you choose. A larger capacity heat pump required for a bigger home will cost more than a smaller unit. Similarly, a system with a higher SEER2 and HSPF2 efficiency rating will have a higher upfront cost than a base model. However, the more efficient unit will save you more money on your utility bills over the long term, so it is important to weigh the initial investment against the lifetime savings.
The complexity of the installation itself will also affect the final cost. For example, a simple replacement of an existing system where the ductwork, refrigerant lines, and electrical wiring are all in good shape will be less expensive. If the installation requires extensive new ductwork, a long and complicated refrigerant line set run, or significant electrical upgrades to your home’s panel, these factors will add to the labor and material costs. The specific brand and model of the heat pump you select will also play a role in the overall price.
At Barney’s Heating and Air, we understand that a new heat pump is a major investment. That is why we provide detailed, transparent, and itemized quotes after our thorough in home consultation. We will walk you through different equipment options at various price points and explain the costs associated with each. We also offer flexible financing options to help make your new comfort system more affordable. Our goal is to help you find the best possible solution that fits both your comfort needs and your budget, ensuring you get the most value for your investment.
