A/C had been out for a couple days. Heat index 105° , 90 ° in house. I called 15 + HVAC companies and the earliest appointment time anybody could come was a week away. I called Barneys . He shot me straight and told me " I'll get you up and going today but it's going to be in the evening." He showed up about 7 pm which is perfectly fine as it was hot. He fixed the problem in 15 mins ( needed refrigerant ) He charged a very fair price. He stands by his word. LIFESAVER!! VERY COOL NOW!!!

I contacted them and within 45 minutes Jacob arrived ready and prepared to look at our A/c unit. Fair priced, friendly, efficient and careful to not misdiagnose the issue.
Excellent service! I called After 5 PM with a down AC unit looking for a diagnostic visit with possible fix. He offered same day and next day options. When he came out and completed the diagnostic, he said he could fix it right away. It Took him less than 30 minutes to get my unit running. Plus it was extremely affordable! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! My A/C went out late Friday night and not many companies were wanting to help and look at my unit until after the weekend and holiday was over, but Barney’s heating and air responded ASAP, and was here first thing in the morning on Saturday! The technician gave me an exact time and was here on time, other companies gave me a big time frame/window 8am-6pm and that just didn’t work for us. This company is affordable and willing to work with you. Definitely will call them again!! Thank you!
Didn't stopped coming to work on it till it was fully fixed highly recommend
Service was AMAZING!!! Especially on a weekend. Found the issue right away and had our A/C running again. I would highly recommend Barney's Heating and Air over anyone I've dealt with in clarksville. Price was great. We are enrolling in his service care for twice a year service for a great price!!!! Again I would recommend him over anyone!!!
Barney and his team was professional, on time, and worked with the other foreman (foundation repair) on site in order to get my foundation repaired correctly and removed, then reinstalled new ductwork after the foundation was repaired. Due to his efforts, I was able to have 2 projects done at the same time and for a fraction of the cost in a total of 2 days. Highly recommend.
Technician knew immediately what the problem was, had the needed parts with him, and fixed the problem in less than an hour.
This isn’t just a review, it’s a debt of personal gratitude. These guys came out and replaced the HVAC system in my rental house in absolutely no time flat. They were able to work with me in the kind of way humans should work with one other, when it really counts. I am extremely grateful for their help with this project, and they have 100% earned all of my future business - barre none
First time (in this house) getting our heat pump inspected. Technician was detailed in explaining what was both good & bad about our 12 year-old system. He explained that our system was still functional but also showed us a part that might fail in the future. He tested the part in our presence & gave us a fair price for replacement (which we did). We were comfortable enough with the service that we are likely to purchase a service/maintenance agreement this Fall.
Excellent service from an honest professional. No one likes having to get an AC replaced, but Barney’s makes it less painful. Extremely responsive (at any time you need him), he will be honest, fair, and provide you a range of options without the up-sale you’d get elsewhere. His work is top notch quality, this is the 3rd time we have used him for our rentals and will continue to do so in the future. Highly recommend for your AC/HVAC needs.
PLUMBERS, Too! I just bought a house and didn’t know the pipes were clogged, the tub had a slow flow, and that the faucets were offset. In addition to heating and cooling, Jake has plumbers on hand. He and his crew did a good job, were friendly, and easy to communicate with.
The communication, fast response, and customer service is what will bring me back. I will definitely call them again to schedule my yearly unit cleaning and any repairs that come up. Highly recommend! Thank you guys!

I was having problems with my HVAC system and I called these guys to come check it out. Bobby and Jacob are very down to Earth guys. Bobby was very upfront about what issues I had with my system and gave me recommendations without feeling like they were trying to push anything on me. I was impressed with the knowledge he had and how fair their pricing was. I'm a single woman that lives alone with my children and I did not once feel uncomfortable with them or feel like they were trying to get over on me. Generator Repair
The generator repair process at Barney’s Heating and Air begins with a thorough and systematic diagnosis of the problem. When our technician arrives at your Clarksville home, they will first gather information from you about the issue you are experiencing. They will ask about any warning lights, unusual noises, or specific failure symptoms you have observed. This initial conversation provides valuable clues to guide the diagnostic process. Next, the technician will perform a comprehensive visual inspection of the entire generator system. This includes checking the unit itself, the automatic transfer switch, and all associated wiring and fuel lines for any obvious signs of damage or wear.
Once the initial inspection is complete, our technician will use advanced diagnostic tools to pinpoint the root cause of the failure. This often starts with checking the generator’s battery, as a weak or dead battery is the most common reason a generator fails to start. We will test the battery’s voltage and load capacity. If the battery is healthy, we move on to testing the electrical system. This involves checking fuses, circuit breakers, and the control board for faults. We will also test the output voltage and frequency of the generator to ensure it is producing clean and stable power.
If the electrical system checks out, the next step is to diagnose the engine and fuel system. Our technicians are skilled in small engine repair and can address a wide range of mechanical issues. We will check the fuel supply to ensure the generator is receiving either natural gas or propane. We will inspect the spark plugs, air filter, and oil level. If the generator is running rough, we may need to clean the carburetor or adjust the fuel mixture. Our methodical approach ensures we accurately identify the problem instead of just treating symptoms. This leads to a more reliable and lasting repair.
After successfully diagnosing the problem, our technician will explain the issue to you in clear, easy to understand language. We will show you the faulty component and describe the necessary repair procedure. We believe in complete transparency, so we will provide you with a detailed, upfront quote for the cost of the repair before any work begins. This quote will include the price for any necessary parts and the labor involved. You will have all the information you need to make an informed decision. We will not proceed with the repair until we have your full approval.
With your approval, our technician will begin the repair work. Our service vehicles are well stocked with a wide range of common replacement parts for major generator brands. This allows us to complete many repairs in a single visit, saving you time and getting your system back online faster. We use only high quality, original equipment manufacturer (OEM) or equivalent parts to ensure the reliability and longevity of our repairs. Our technicians work with precision and care, following manufacturer specifications and industry best practices for every repair they perform.
After the repair is complete, we do not just pack up and leave. We conduct a full operational test of the generator system to verify that the repair was successful. This involves starting the generator and letting it run to ensure it operates smoothly. We will also simulate a power outage to test the automatic transfer switch. We confirm that the generator starts automatically, the switch transfers the load correctly, and your home is receiving stable power. This comprehensive testing ensures that all components are working together as they should and that your generator is truly ready for the next outage.
Finally, our technician will review the repairs that were made with you. We will provide you with an invoice and documentation of the work performed for your records. We will also offer advice on preventative maintenance to help you avoid similar issues in the future. Our goal at Barney’s Heating and Air is not just to fix your generator but to restore your confidence in your backup power system. We stand behind our work and are committed to providing the highest level of service and customer satisfaction to the Clarksville community.

Most Common Generator Repair Questions
When your reliable backup power source suddenly isn’t reliable, it’s natural to have concerns and questions. A malfunctioning generator can be stressful, especially with a storm on the horizon. Understanding the common issues and the repair process can help you feel more prepared and confident in the solution.
A generator’s failure to start is the most common issue homeowners face, and it can almost always be traced back to one of a few key culprits. The single most frequent reason for a starting failure is a problem with the battery. Just like a car battery, a generator’s battery can lose its charge over time, especially if the unit has been sitting idle. It can also fail due to age or corroded terminals that prevent a solid electrical connection. Our first diagnostic step is always to test the battery’s voltage and load capacity. Often, a simple battery replacement or cleaning the terminals is all that is needed to resolve the issue.
If the battery is healthy, the next area to investigate is the fuel system. A generator cannot start without a proper supply of fuel. For natural gas or propane units, this could be due to a closed valve somewhere on the fuel line or an issue with the gas utility or propane tank. Forgetting to check the fuel level in a propane tank is a common oversight. The fuel lines themselves can also become blocked or the fuel regulator can fail, preventing fuel from reaching the engine. Our technicians will trace the fuel supply from the source to the engine to ensure it is flowing correctly.
Other potential causes for a no start condition are related to the engine’s basic needs: spark and air. A fouled or old spark plug may not be able to create a strong enough spark to ignite the fuel. The engine’s air filter can become clogged with dirt and debris, especially if maintenance has been neglected, which chokes off the air supply. Finally, a safety sensor could be preventing the generator from starting. For example, most generators have a low oil sensor that will shut the unit down or prevent it from starting if the oil level is too low to protect the engine from damage.
This is a frustrating and surprisingly common scenario that points to a problem somewhere between the generator and your home’s electrical panel. If the generator engine is running smoothly, it means the issue is likely not mechanical. The problem lies within the electrical components of the system. The first and simplest thing to check is the generator’s own circuit breaker. Most generators have a main breaker located on the unit itself. If this breaker has tripped, it will prevent any power from leaving the generator, even though the engine is running. Resetting this breaker can sometimes solve the problem.
If the generator’s breaker is fine, the next place to look is the automatic transfer switch (ATS). The ATS is the device that physically switches your home’s power source from the utility grid to the generator. A transfer switch can fail to operate for several reasons. It could have a blown fuse, a tripped internal breaker, or a faulty control board. The switching mechanism itself, called a contactor, can also become stuck or fail. Our technicians have the electrical expertise to safely open the ATS and diagnose these types of internal faults. This is not something a homeowner should ever attempt themselves due to the high voltages involved.
Another possibility is a problem with the wiring that connects the generator to the transfer switch or the transfer switch to your main electrical panel. A loose connection, a damaged wire, or corrosion can interrupt the flow of electricity. Our technicians will meticulously inspect and test all the electrical connections and conduits as part of the diagnostic process. We use specialized electrical meters to trace the path of the current and identify exactly where the interruption is occurring. This systematic approach ensures we find the precise point of failure and restore power to your home.
A generator engine that is running rough, surging, or stalling often indicates a problem with the fuel and air mixture. The most common cause is a dirty or clogged carburetor. Over time, varnish and deposits from fuel can build up inside the carburetor’s tiny passages, restricting the flow of fuel. This “starves” the engine of the fuel it needs, causing it to run erratically. This is more common in gasoline powered portable generators but can also affect the demand regulators on natural gas and propane units. A thorough cleaning of the carburetor or fuel regulator by a qualified technician is often required to fix this.
An inconsistent fuel supply can also lead to a rough running engine. For a propane fueled generator, this could be caused by a failing regulator on the propane tank, which is not delivering fuel at a consistent pressure. For a natural gas unit, there could be an issue with the utility supply or the home’s gas meter. Our technicians can test the fuel pressure at the generator to determine if it is receiving a steady and adequate supply. Any blockages in the fuel line or a dirty fuel filter can also contribute to this problem by restricting flow.
The engine’s governor is another component that can cause surging. The governor’s job is to maintain a constant engine speed (RPM) as the electrical load on the generator changes. If the governor is malfunctioning or out of adjustment, it can cause the engine speed to hunt up and down, which you will hear as a surging sound. This also results in unstable voltage output, which can be damaging to your appliances. Adjusting or repairing the governor is a delicate task that requires specialized knowledge of the engine’s mechanics to ensure it runs at the precise speed needed for clean power generation.
A generator repair service call from Barney’s Heating and Air is a comprehensive process designed to get your system back in perfect working order. The service begins with a professional and courteous technician arriving at your home on time. They will start by discussing the problem with you to understand the symptoms you’ve observed. This is followed by a complete diagnostic inspection of the generator, the automatic transfer switch, the battery, and all related fuel and electrical systems. We use a systematic approach to ensure we accurately identify the root cause of the problem, not just the symptoms.
Once the diagnosis is complete, our technician will provide you with a clear, detailed explanation of the issue. We will outline the specific repairs that are needed to correct the problem. You will then receive a firm, upfront price for the total cost of the repair, including all parts and labor. We believe in transparent pricing with no hidden fees, so you can make an informed decision with confidence. We will not perform any work until you have reviewed and approved the quote. This puts you in complete control of the repair process.
After you approve the repair, our technician will get to work. We use only high quality parts and perform all repairs according to manufacturer specifications and the highest industry standards. Once the repair is finished, we conduct a full system test. We start the generator, let it run, and simulate a power outage to ensure the automatic transfer switch functions correctly and that your home is receiving power. We do not consider the job done until we have verified that your entire backup power system is operating flawlessly and is ready for the next outage.
The single most effective way to prevent future generator problems is to invest in a regular, preventative maintenance plan. A generator is a complex piece of mechanical and electrical equipment, and just like your car, it requires routine service to stay reliable. Neglecting maintenance is the number one cause of generator failure. An annual or semi annual service visit from a qualified technician can catch small issues before they become major, expensive repairs. At Barney’s Heating and Air, we offer tailored maintenance agreements designed to keep your generator in peak condition year round.
During a maintenance visit, our technicians perform a series of crucial tasks. We change the engine oil and filter, replace the spark plugs, and clean or replace the air filter. We test the battery and clean its terminals, ensuring it’s ready to start the engine. We also inspect the entire fuel system for leaks and proper pressure, and check all electrical connections for tightness and signs of corrosion. This proactive service addresses all the most common points of failure, dramatically increasing the chances your generator will perform perfectly when called upon.
Beyond professional maintenance, there is one simple thing you can do as a homeowner. Most modern standby generators are programmed to run a weekly self test cycle. This cycle typically runs the generator for about 10 to 15 minutes without transferring the electrical load. It is very important to allow your generator to complete this weekly exercise. It circulates the oil in the engine, charges the battery, and keeps all the mechanical parts lubricated and ready to go. If you notice your generator is not performing its weekly test, it’s an early warning sign that you should call for service.
Deciding whether to repair or replace an old generator depends on several key factors. The first thing to consider is the overall condition of the unit and the nature of the required repair. If the generator has been well maintained and the problem is a relatively minor one, such as a faulty sensor or a bad battery, a repair is almost always the most cost effective option. If the repair cost is only a small fraction of the price of a new unit, it makes financial sense to fix it. Our technicians can give you an honest assessment of the generator’s condition to help you make this decision.
However, if the generator is suffering from a major mechanical failure, such as a seized engine or a failed rotor or stator, the repair costs can be substantial. In these cases, the cost of the repair might approach 50% or more of the cost of a new generator. When faced with such a significant expense, it is often more prudent to invest that money into a new, more efficient unit. A new generator will come with a full manufacturer’s warranty, modern features, and the promise of many years of reliable service. Pouring a large sum of money into a very old unit with other aging components can be a risky investment.
You should also consider the age and parts availability for your generator. For very old or obscure models, finding the correct replacement parts can be difficult and expensive, if not impossible. Technology has also advanced significantly in recent years. Newer generators are often quieter, more fuel efficient, and have more advanced control systems than older models. If your current generator is over 15 to 20 years old and requires a major repair, the benefits of upgrading to a new, modern system often outweigh the cost of fixing the old one.
Any new or unusual noise coming from your generator should be investigated by a professional technician. Different noises can indicate different problems, and it’s important to identify the cause. A loud rattling or banging noise could be a sign of a loose mechanical component. This might be something as simple as a loose housing panel, or it could be something more serious like a problem with the engine’s pistons, bearings, or flywheel. If you hear a noise like this, it is best to shut the generator down safely to prevent further damage and call for service.
A high pitched squealing or grinding sound often points to a problem with a bearing. The generator’s engine and the alternator have several bearings that allow parts to rotate smoothly. When a bearing starts to fail, it will often create a distinct squealing or grinding noise that gets worse as the unit runs. Continuing to run a generator with a failing bearing can lead to a catastrophic failure of the engine or alternator. This is a repair that should be addressed immediately to avoid a much more expensive replacement down the road.
If you hear a loud backfiring or popping sound from the exhaust, it usually indicates an issue with the engine’s combustion. This could be caused by a problem with the fuel to air mixture, an ignition timing issue, or carbon buildup in the engine. While it may not seem as immediately critical as a mechanical banging noise, it is a sign that the engine is not running efficiently and could be sustaining damage. No matter what the strange noise is, the safest course of action is to not run the generator until it has been inspected by a qualified repair technician from Barney’s Heating and Air.
