A/C had been out for a couple days. Heat index 105° , 90 ° in house. I called 15 + HVAC companies and the earliest appointment time anybody could come was a week away. I called Barneys . He shot me straight and told me " I'll get you up and going today but it's going to be in the evening." He showed up about 7 pm which is perfectly fine as it was hot. He fixed the problem in 15 mins ( needed refrigerant ) He charged a very fair price. He stands by his word. LIFESAVER!! VERY COOL NOW!!!
I am very pleased with this company and the service provided. I appreciate how smooth and hassle-free the whole process was. They really go above and beyond for their customers. I would recommend jake and his team to all my friends and family. Thanks jake for your great service.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! My A/C went out late Friday night and not many companies were wanting to help and look at my unit until after the weekend and holiday was over, but Barney’s heating and air responded ASAP, and was here first thing in the morning on Saturday! The technician gave me an exact time and was here on time, other companies gave me a big time frame/window 8am-6pm and that just didn’t work for us. This company is affordable and willing to work with you. Definitely will call them again!! Thank you!
Didn't stopped coming to work on it till it was fully fixed highly recommend
Service was AMAZING!!! Especially on a weekend. Found the issue right away and had our A/C running again. I would highly recommend Barney's Heating and Air over anyone I've dealt with in clarksville. Price was great. We are enrolling in his service care for twice a year service for a great price!!!! Again I would recommend him over anyone!!!
Barney and his team was professional, on time, and worked with the other foreman (foundation repair) on site in order to get my foundation repaired correctly and removed, then reinstalled new ductwork after the foundation was repaired. Due to his efforts, I was able to have 2 projects done at the same time and for a fraction of the cost in a total of 2 days. Highly recommend.
Technician knew immediately what the problem was, had the needed parts with him, and fixed the problem in less than an hour.
This isn’t just a review, it’s a debt of personal gratitude. These guys came out and replaced the HVAC system in my rental house in absolutely no time flat. They were able to work with me in the kind of way humans should work with one other, when it really counts. I am extremely grateful for their help with this project, and they have 100% earned all of my future business - barre none
First time (in this house) getting our heat pump inspected. Technician was detailed in explaining what was both good & bad about our 12 year-old system. He explained that our system was still functional but also showed us a part that might fail in the future. He tested the part in our presence & gave us a fair price for replacement (which we did). We were comfortable enough with the service that we are likely to purchase a service/maintenance agreement this Fall.
Excellent service from an honest professional. No one likes having to get an AC replaced, but Barney’s makes it less painful. Extremely responsive (at any time you need him), he will be honest, fair, and provide you a range of options without the up-sale you’d get elsewhere. His work is top notch quality, this is the 3rd time we have used him for our rentals and will continue to do so in the future. Highly recommend for your AC/HVAC needs.
PLUMBERS, Too! I just bought a house and didn’t know the pipes were clogged, the tub had a slow flow, and that the faucets were offset. In addition to heating and cooling, Jake has plumbers on hand. He and his crew did a good job, were friendly, and easy to communicate with.
The communication, fast response, and customer service is what will bring me back. I will definitely call them again to schedule my yearly unit cleaning and any repairs that come up. Highly recommend! Thank you guys!

I was having problems with my HVAC system and I called these guys to come check it out. Bobby and Jacob are very down to Earth guys. Bobby was very upfront about what issues I had with my system and gave me recommendations without feeling like they were trying to push anything on me. I was impressed with the knowledge he had and how fair their pricing was. I'm a single woman that lives alone with my children and I did not once feel uncomfortable with them or feel like they were trying to get over on me. They ended up installing a new unit in my home and did an amazing job. I have not had one issue with it since. I would def. recommend this company to anyone I know! Thank you guys!!

Heat Pump Maintenance
Comprehensive heat pump maintenance should be performed twice a year to ensure optimal performance. We recommend one service visit in the spring to prepare the system for the cooling season and another in the fall for the heating season. Our maintenance process begins with a thorough cleaning of the outdoor unit. The outdoor coil can become clogged with dirt, leaves, and grass clippings, which severely restricts airflow and reduces efficiency. Our technicians will carefully clean the coil, the cabinet, and the fan blades. We also ensure the unit is level on its pad and that there are no obstructions, like overgrown shrubs, blocking airflow around it.
Next, we move indoors to service the air handler unit. We start by inspecting and cleaning the indoor evaporator coil. A dirty indoor coil can lead to reduced cooling capacity, poor dehumidification, and can even become a source of mold growth. We also inspect the blower motor and wheel, cleaning them as necessary to ensure proper airflow through your duct system. A clean blower assembly moves more air while using less electricity. We will also lubricate the motor’s bearings if required by the manufacturer. This attention to the indoor unit is critical for both efficiency and indoor air quality.
A crucial part of our maintenance visit is inspecting the system’s electrical components. We will check and tighten all electrical connections in both the indoor and outdoor units. Loose connections can be a fire hazard and can cause damage to sensitive components like the compressor and fan motor. We will also test the voltage and amperage draw of the system’s motors to ensure they are operating within the manufacturer’s specifications. We inspect the capacitors, which help start the motors, and test their capacitance to ensure they are not weakening, as a failing capacitor is a common cause of breakdowns.
The refrigerant charge of your heat pump is vital to its performance. An improperly charged system will not heat or cool effectively and will use more energy. As part of our maintenance service, our technicians will attach gauges to the system to measure the refrigerant pressure and temperature. We use these readings to calculate the system’s superheat and subcooling. This tells us if the refrigerant charge is correct. If the charge is low, it indicates a leak, which we can then locate and repair. We do not just add refrigerant; we find and fix the source of the problem.
We also perform a detailed inspection of the system’s condensate drainage system. In cooling mode, your heat pump removes a significant amount of moisture from the air. This moisture, or condensate, must drain away properly. We will inspect the drain pan and flush the condensate line to ensure it is clear of any algae or sludge buildup. A clogged condensate line can cause water to back up and overflow, leading to significant water damage in your home. This simple preventative step is one of the most important parts of our spring maintenance visit.
During the fall maintenance visit, we pay special attention to the heat pump’s heating functions. We will initiate a defrost cycle to ensure the defrost control board, sensors, and reversing valve are all functioning correctly. The defrost cycle is essential to prevent the outdoor coil from icing up during cold weather, which would stop it from absorbing heat. We will also inspect and test the auxiliary electric heat strips. We ensure they are working properly so you have reliable backup heat available for the coldest days of the winter.
Finally, our technician will test the system’s overall performance and controls. We will cycle the heat pump on and off using the thermostat to ensure it is communicating correctly with the system. We will check the temperature differential, or the difference between the air going into and coming out of your vents, to verify the system is heating or cooling effectively. We will also check your air filter and remind you of the importance of changing it regularly. At the end of the visit, we will provide you with a detailed report of our findings and any recommendations for improving your system’s performance.

Most Common Heat Pump Maintenance Questions
Regular, professional maintenance is the single most important thing you can do to protect your heat pump investment. It ensures efficiency, prevents breakdowns, and extends the life of the system. Homeowners often have questions about what this maintenance entails and why it’s so crucial for their all in one comfort system.
Heat pump maintenance is critically important for several key reasons, with the first being energy efficiency. Over time, dirt and debris accumulate on the indoor and outdoor coils, and mechanical parts can fall out of calibration. This forces your heat pump to work harder and run longer to heat or cool your home, leading to a significant increase in your electricity consumption. A professional tune up from Barney’s Heating and Air restores your system to its factory fresh efficiency. A clean, well calibrated system uses less energy, which directly translates to lower monthly utility bills and saves you money throughout the year.
The second major reason for regular maintenance is the prevention of unexpected and costly breakdowns. During a maintenance visit, our technicians perform a thorough inspection of all the system’s components. We can identify and address small, emerging issues, such as a weakening capacitor, a loose electrical connection, or a worn motor bearing, before they fail completely. Catching these problems early is far less expensive than paying for an emergency repair call on the hottest or coldest day of the year. Preventative maintenance is a proactive investment that helps you avoid inconvenient and expensive system failures.
Finally, regular maintenance is essential for extending the lifespan of your heat pump. A heat pump is a major home investment, and you want it to last as long as possible. A system that is neglected and forced to work under strain will wear out much faster. The regular cleaning, lubrication, and calibration performed during a maintenance visit reduces the stress on critical components like the compressor, which is the heart of the system. A well maintained heat pump can provide reliable service for 15 years or more, while a neglected one may fail in less than 10.
Because a heat pump works year round to both heat and cool your home, it accumulates twice the run time of a separate furnace and air conditioner. For this reason, the industry standard and manufacturer recommendation is to have your heat pump professionally serviced twice a year. This schedule ensures that your system is properly prepared for the demands of the upcoming season. It is not just about checking if it turns on; it is about optimizing its performance for the specific task of either heating or cooling. This biannual schedule is the key to maintaining peak efficiency and reliability.
The ideal timing for these two service visits is in the spring, before you start relying on it for cooling, and in the fall, before the heating season begins. The spring maintenance visit focuses on preparing the system for summer. This includes a thorough cleaning of the outdoor coil, checking the refrigerant charge for optimal cooling performance, and clearing the condensate drain line to prevent water damage. This tune up ensures your system is ready to handle the Clarksville summer heat efficiently and effectively, keeping your home cool and your energy bills in check.
The fall maintenance visit prepares the system for winter. During this service, we focus on the heating components. We test the reversing valve to ensure it switches over to heating mode correctly. We also inspect and test the defrost cycle controls and the auxiliary heat strips. This ensures that your system will provide reliable and efficient heat, and that you have a dependable backup source for the coldest winter days. Following this twice a year maintenance schedule is the best way to protect your investment and ensure comfortable, trouble free operation all year long.
A professional heat pump tune up from Barney’s Heating and Air is a comprehensive service that covers every aspect of your system. Our technicians follow a detailed, multi point checklist to ensure nothing is missed. Key tasks include a thorough cleaning of both the indoor evaporator coil and the outdoor condenser coil to maximize heat transfer and efficiency. We also clean the blower motor components to ensure proper airflow and inspect and clear the condensate drain system to prevent clogs and water damage. A clean system is an efficient system.
The service also includes a complete electrical inspection. We check and tighten all electrical connections, test the voltage and amperage of the motors, and inspect the capacitors and contactors for wear. This prevents electrical failures and ensures safe operation. We also perform a critical check of the refrigerant level. Using specialized gauges, we measure the system’s refrigerant charge to ensure it matches the manufacturer’s specifications. An incorrect charge is a leading cause of inefficiency and component damage, so this is a vital step for both heating and cooling performance.
Finally, we test the system’s overall operation and controls. We calibrate the thermostat, check the temperature output at your vents, and verify that all safety controls are functioning properly. For the heating season tune up, we specifically test the defrost cycle and the auxiliary heating elements. At the end of the visit, we provide you with a full report of our findings and make any necessary recommendations. This thorough process is designed to restore your heat pump to its peak performance, ensuring a season of reliable and efficient comfort.
While there are a few simple maintenance tasks that homeowners can and should perform themselves, the vast majority of heat pump maintenance requires the expertise and specialized tools of a trained HVAC professional. The most important task for a homeowner is to regularly check and change the system’s air filter. A clogged air filter restricts airflow, which reduces efficiency and can cause serious damage to the system. You should inspect your filter every month and replace it whenever it looks dirty, which is typically every one to three months depending on your home.
Another simple task you can do is to keep the area around your outdoor unit clear. Make sure there is at least two feet of clearance on all sides of the unit. Regularly trim back any bushes, weeds, or other vegetation that could obstruct airflow. Also, be sure to keep leaves, grass clippings, and other debris from accumulating on top of and around the unit. You can gently hose down the outside of the outdoor unit’s fins to remove loose dirt, but be careful not to bend the delicate aluminum fins.
However, any task that involves opening the system’s panels is best left to a professional. This includes cleaning the indoor and outdoor coils, checking electrical components, and measuring the refrigerant charge. These tasks require specialized knowledge and tools, and working with high voltage electricity and high pressure refrigerant is dangerous for an untrained individual. Attempting these tasks yourself can lead to personal injury, damage to the system, and may even void your manufacturer’s warranty. The best approach is a partnership: you handle the filter and clearance, and let a pro from Barney’s Heating and Air handle the technical tune up.
Skipping your regular heat pump maintenance can lead to a cascade of negative consequences that will cost you money and comfort in the long run. The first thing you will notice is a gradual increase in your energy bills. As dirt builds up on the coils and parts lose their calibration, your system’s efficiency will decline steadily. It will have to run longer and work harder to achieve the same level of heating or cooling, which directly translates to higher electricity consumption. This slow creep in your bills might not be obvious month to month, but over a year, it can add up to a significant amount of wasted money.
The next and more serious consequence is a much higher likelihood of a sudden and expensive breakdown. Many system failures are the direct result of a lack of maintenance. A simple issue like a clogged condensate drain can lead to a flooded ceiling and costly water damage. A failing capacitor, which would be caught during a maintenance visit, can cause a chain reaction that damages the much more expensive compressor motor. Skipping maintenance means these small problems go unnoticed until they snowball into a major system failure, often leaving you without heat or AC when you need it most.
Ultimately, consistently skipping maintenance will shorten the lifespan of your heat pump. The added strain and wear and tear on a neglected system will cause components to fail prematurely. The compressor, in particular, is vulnerable to damage from issues like low airflow or an incorrect refrigerant charge. A heat pump that could have lasted 15 years or more with regular care might fail completely in less than a decade without it. Forgoing the small, predictable cost of annual maintenance will almost certainly lead to the much larger, premature expense of a full system replacement.
While many of the core tasks of heat pump maintenance are the same for both seasons, there are specific points of focus for the spring cooling tune up and the fall heating tune up. The fundamental checks, such as cleaning the coils, checking airflow, and inspecting electrical components, are crucial for both heating and cooling efficiency and are performed on every visit. These tasks form the foundation of a good maintenance plan regardless of the season. However, we tailor parts of the service to prepare the system for the specific demands of the upcoming weather.
During the spring maintenance visit, our primary focus is on the system’s cooling performance. A critical step is the inspection and cleaning of the condensate drainage system. The system removes a lot of humidity from the air in cooling mode, and we need to ensure that water can drain away freely to prevent backups and water damage. We also pay very close attention to the refrigerant charge as it relates to cooling. We measure the system’s superheat to ensure the charge is optimized for efficient cooling and dehumidification, which is key to summer comfort in Clarksville’s humid climate.
In the fall, our focus shifts to ensuring reliable and efficient heating for the winter. The most important season specific task is to test the heat pump’s defrost cycle. We manually initiate the defrost mode to verify that the sensors, control board, and reversing valve are all working together correctly to melt any ice that may form on the outdoor coil in cold weather. A malfunctioning defrost cycle can cause the unit to become a solid block of ice, rendering it useless. We also thoroughly inspect and test the auxiliary electric heat strips to guarantee you have a dependable source of backup heat for the coldest winter days.
Yes, regular heat pump maintenance can play a significant role in improving your home’s indoor air quality and helping to alleviate allergy symptoms. A key part of our maintenance service is a thorough cleaning of the indoor unit’s components, particularly the evaporator coil and the blower wheel. Over time, these dark, damp components can become a breeding ground for mold, mildew, and bacteria. When your system runs, it can circulate these microscopic allergens throughout your home via the ductwork, triggering allergy and asthma symptoms. Our cleaning process removes this potential source of contamination.
Another critical aspect is the air filter. While changing the filter is a homeowner’s responsibility, our technicians will inspect it during our visit and can offer advice on the best type of filter for your needs. Using a high quality, high MERV rated filter is one of the most effective ways to capture airborne allergens like pollen, dust mites, pet dander, and mold spores. We can ensure you are using the right size and type of filter and that it is installed correctly to prevent air from bypassing it. A clean filter and a clean system work together to reduce the overall level of allergens in your air.
Furthermore, by ensuring your system is providing proper dehumidification during the cooling season, maintenance helps to control another major allergen: dust mites. Dust mites thrive in high humidity environments. A well maintained heat pump will do a better job of removing excess moisture from the air, helping to keep your home’s relative humidity below the 50% threshold that dust mites prefer. By keeping your entire HVAC system clean and running at peak performance, our maintenance service helps create a healthier indoor environment for you and your family.
If our technician discovers a problem during a routine maintenance visit, we will immediately bring it to your attention. We believe in clear and honest communication. The technician will stop what they are doing and explain the issue to you in plain, easy to understand language. They will show you the worn or faulty part whenever possible and explain why it is a concern. Our goal is to educate you about the health of your system so you can make an informed decision. We will never use high pressure sales tactics.
After explaining the problem, we will provide you with a detailed and transparent quote for the necessary repair. This quote will clearly outline the cost of the parts and the labor required to fix the issue. We will give you our professional recommendation, explaining the benefits of making the repair now versus the potential risks of waiting. In many cases, addressing a small problem found during maintenance is much less expensive than waiting for it to cause a major breakdown later on.
The decision to proceed with the repair is always yours. If you approve the quote, our technicians are often able to perform the repair on the spot. Our service vehicles are well stocked with the most common replacement parts for heat pumps, such as capacitors, contactors, and fan motors. This means we can often resolve the issue in the same visit, saving you the time and inconvenience of scheduling a separate repair call. Our priority is to leave your system in the best possible condition, ensuring it is safe, reliable, and efficient.
